COBC English Ministry

Christian Education Ministry

Led by Glenda Calabitin, the CE Committee oversees the small groups for Sunday school and the discipleship training in the afternoons. In order to help people share their lives and more actively encourage one another, we split up into small fellowship cell groups. Each group has a teacher, an outreach leader and about 9 or 10 other members. We have one special group for visitors and an English group for Chinese brothers and sisters.

We currently have nine small groups, and we are studying the Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. In the afternoon we focus on more practical topics in small discipleship groups and a follow-up group for young believers. We study topics like Survival Kit, Women of the Bible, The Mind of Christ, The Ten Commandments, Equipped to Serve and Basics of Christian Life.

Since the bottleneck in most groups is a shortage of good lay leaders and teachers, we hope that the small groups and special leadership training will help build up lay leaders in our church. In addition, some ladies have enrolled in Sunday evening seminary courses through TEFL (Theological Education for Filipino Leaders), which is part of the HK Baptist Theological Seminary.

Worship Ministry

The worship ministry had several members who took turns as ushers, greeters, presiders or pianists for our worship services. Vivian Sevelo is currently leading our worship ministry. During the worship service we praise God for who He is and what He has done. It is a time to quiet our hearts before God and allow Him to minister to our spiritual life, especially after a long, hard week. We also sing songs, pray, read scripture, give our tithes and offerings and listen to preaching from God's Word.

Music Ministry

Currently led by Sosana Libres, the music ministry has a team who lead us in singing praises to God during our worship service. We sing a mixture of traditional and modern praise and worship songs and hymns. Some of us lead the Singspiration time and some sing in our Easter and Christmas cantatas.

Outreach Ministry

Currently led by Margielyn Terora, the Outreach Ministry stepped out on faith on Sunday mornings before church to try and reach out to friends and other Filipinas and Indonesians hanging around City One. The goal was to either invite them to attend morning worship services, share the good news of Jesus and eternal life, and/or distribute Gospel tracts. Each year we have some evangelistic messages or movies for members to invite guests. For instance, we watched Hinugot sa Dilim, Kandungan ng Langit, The Crossing, Amazing Grace, A Thief in the Night, Ben Hur and stories of Bible characters like Abraham, Jacob, Moses and Esther.

We do some mission work in Macau and the Philippines, give financial assistance to disaster relief projects and support mission work and seminary students' studies. We are supporting one seminary student and she is now in her last year of study. Another seminary student the church has supported has graduated and is in the field. We encourage our members to be good Christian workers in the homes and families God has place them to serve.

Social Ministry

Led by Josie Eran, the social ministry facilitates informal fellowship, especially on special holidays, like Chinese New Year, Easter, Dragon Boat Festival, etc. They organize specials talks to help our members in work and health-related areas. The church also sometimes joins the annual Baptist Inter Church Sports Fest.

The Congregation Council

Our congregation council meets once a month for planning and discussion. Its aim is to help the ladies work together effectively and harmoniously for the faith of the gospel (Phil. 1:27). The church council includes Rev. Jerry Juergens, Ellen Spaeth, Mr. Tai Wat (coordinator), Mrs. Gigi Chan (adviser), Ms. Annie Law (adviser) and the leaders of each ministry.

Pastoral Team

Dr. Jerry Juergens and Ellen Spaeth together lead our group and take turns preaching on Sundays. We also invite some guest preachers. Together with the congregation council and congregation we choose monthly based on topics of interest to the group. For instance, in the past, some themes have been the Word of God, financial management, relationships in the body, the character and nature of God, obedience and commitment, making wise decisions, missions, relationships at work, Christian family values and the holiness of God.

Children・s Church

We also have a children・s church. They are the children of church members and children of the ladies・ employers. They talk, play, read stories, eat, watch Christian videos, and have some teaching. The children perform on special occasions like Christmas or Mother・s Day.

2007 Highlights

*13th anniversary

The COBC English ministry celebrated its 13th anniversary in September 2007. We thank God for His love and faithfulness in helping us walk with Him, transform our lives, overcome sinful habits, develop eternal perspective and develop Christian values that help in our relationships with family members, church members, friends, employers and non-Christians. Although many ladies leave us each year, God continually brings some new ones in.

Baptism

We had two baptism services with the Lord・s supper every year. In January, four ladies and one man were baptized, and nine ladies transferred their membership. In July, four ladies and one man were baptized, and nine transferred their membership. The July baptism was held at the Wu Kai Sha beach.

Easter Cantata

Our Easter Cantata was entitled :The Bread Of Life;. We joined the Easter music fest sponsored by TEFL and had wonderful time pondering God・s love expressed through Christ・s death on the cross.

TEFL Graduation

The Church encouraged and sponsored the members to join the TEFL classes run by HK Baptist Theological Seminary. The courses aim to help students better serve in the church. Five COBC members graduated this year: Glenda Calabitin, Elma Fe Villas, Jhonna Domingo, Regina Santoyo and Sosana Libres, who received the Certificate Scholarship Award for having the highest grades in her program.

Inter-church Sports Fest

Several ladies represented our group at the Inter-Baptist Sport Fest. They had fun and fellowship with other Baptist church members.

Mission to Macau

25 people went to Macau to sing and share the Gospel. We thank God for those who came to the outreach service and for those who were saved.

Christmas Cantata

The theme of this year・s Christmas Cantata was :God・s Great Love.; Members & children all took part in this event to celebrate Christ・s birth.

Children・s Church

This is our small group of children. During adult worship time, teachers share with them messages and stories from the Bible. They also talk, eat, watch Christian videos and engage in educational activities.
